L’Agulhas is the last little village situated at the southernmost tip of the African continent. Visitors are drawn to its beautiful surroundings of mountains, veld and ocean. But with the strong forces caused by the meeting of oceans at this tip of Africa, this beautiful wild nature is also be the cause of most of the hauntings.

No one really knows the origin of the appearances of these ghosts and many different stories, on the origin gets told. The most talked about phantoms of the area is of a very inquisitive lady and a headless man who created the legendary ghosts of “Spookdraai. “

The origin story of the phantom young woman was that she was the survivor of one of the many shipwrecks and was washed up on shore. To get proper shelter she later moved into one of the many limestone caves that can be found along the Spookdraai trail, where sadly she died a lonely death.

Apparently, there were visitors to a guesthouse near Spookdraai trail, who refused to stay in their room after being frightened by a ghost of a woman in old-fashioned dress who appeared to them.

However, being of a gregarious nature she often visits surrounding residencies as well, with the wish for human contact. They say she has the most beautiful voice and exquisite slender hands. So be warned: If you are a friendly soul, you may expect “unexpected” company!

There have also been recent sightings of a headless man who walks the road at the entrance to L’Agulhas on mist shrouded nights, scaring the life out of people driving home from local restaurants and pubs.

One of the folklore’s is that he is the ghost of a gruesome car accident. Spookdraai’s curve in the road has had its share of accident and they say that one of these pure souls’ head was severed in the crash and it rolled over the road.

Other say he is one of the three skeletons that were dug out of an open plot. Some people thought that they belonged to soldiers that lived in a seamen camp, during World War II when a radar screen was installed on the L’Agulhas Mountain, but none of the soldiers was buried there. After the war, the camp was sold on auction and divided it into holiday apartments, after refurbishing.

No one knows exactly who they were before they departed our dimension, but with the folklore still strong they now live among us.
